Top-of-the-line Alentejo wine hits the market
Present in the region for over three decades, Herdade do Peso showcases the best of the Alentejo in a new Icon wine. The 2018 vintage is only the third release of this wine, which is produced exclusively in exceptional years, and it hits the market this month, just in time for Christmas.
The wait was worth it. Time took its course, and nature saw to it that 2018 would prove to be a great year—one worthy of a new Icon from Herdade do Peso. Of particular note were the months of July and August, with below-normal temperatures, which created the conditions for excellent phenolic ripening.
As the ultimate expression of Peso, this new release adds an important chapter to the history of the “new” Herdade do Peso. It represents the culmination of a significant investment and commitment to viticulture and biodiversity at this estate in the heart of Vidigueira, which has already resulted in new wines and a new winery.
Only three vintages have been released, and this is the second crafted by Luís Cabral de Almeida. For the winemaker, “The Ícone 2018 embodies the deep knowledge that all of us at Herdade do Peso have of the region, of Vidigueira, of our vineyards, and of our grapes. Our passion and dedication to producing high-quality, gastronomic, and authentic wines, true to their origins.” Bottled in 2020, it brings together the finest Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional, and Petit Verdot grapes, and is “powerful, yet with an elegance and complexity that we can only create with a little extra help from nature,” he concludes. The 12 months of aging in 3,000-liter French oak barrels also contributed to this profile.
Launched at the end of this month, Herdade do Peso Ícone 2018 will be available at specialty stores, wine shops, and high-end restaurants.
