On this International Port Wine Day, September 10, Sogrape highlights some of the wine tourism experiences worth adding to your calendar this month.
September is all about the grape harvest, long, leisurely afternoons, and, of course, Port wine. International Port Wine Day, established in Portugal by the Douro and Port Wine Institute (IVDP) on September 10, is the perfect invitation to rediscover one of Portugal’s greatest symbols—not only at the table, but in the places where its history continues to be written.
From the century-old cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia to the terraced vineyards of the Douro, Porto Ferreira and Sandeman’s program features guided tours, special tastings, food pairings, and toasts in unique settings, in a celebration that brings together heritage, tradition, and gastronomy.
A Toast to History in Vila Nova de Gaia
In Vila Nova de Gaia, the Porto Ferreira and Sandeman Cellars open their doors to a journey into the world of Port wine.
At the Porto Ferreira Cellars, visitors can learn about the history of Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, stroll through corridors lined with century-old casks, and enjoy an additional tasting of Porto Ferreira Dona Antónia 10-Year-Old White.

At the Sandeman Cellars, the tour comes to life through the iconic figure of “The Don,” who continues to guide visitors through the brand’s historic spaces. To celebrate International Port Wine Day, anyone taking a guided tour will also be treated to a complimentary Port Tonic at the Terrace by Sogrape, which offers a spectacular view of the Douro River. At the Sandeman store, the Port wine recipe book, *Port to Port*, will be offered with the purchase of select items.

The Origins of Port Wine
For those who wish to extend the celebration, the journey continues to the heart of the Douro, at Quinta do Seixo, one of Sandeman’s most iconic estates in the region.
Set against a landscape designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stands out for its prime location overlooking the Douro River and the wine tourism experience it offers. In 2025, it was recognized as one of the world’s best vineyards, having been included in The World’s 50 Best Vineyards ranking. Among the available experiences, the Biodiversity Trail stands out, having received an Honorable Mention at the 2026 Best of Wine Tourism Awards in the category of sustainable practices in wine tourism.
Quinta do Seixo invites visitors to discover the origins of Port wine through tours of the winery, tastings of various vintages, and tasting sessions with views of the vineyards.

In the late afternoon, the experience continues on the terrace at Quinta do Seixo, where a Port Tonic will be served against the backdrop of the Douro’s majestic landscape.

On September 10, the celebration takes place between Gaia and the Douro, with a glass of Port wine in hand and plenty of reasons to set out on a journey of discovery. To learn about all available experiences, visiting hours, and reservations, simply click here.
With deep roots in the country’s history, Port wine continues to look toward the future, establishing itself as a strategic category for Sogrape and for Portugal’s international profile.
