Antónia Adelaide Ferreira DOC Douro Red 2019 is the new vintage of a wine that honors a unique figure in the history of the Douro wine region. With a limited production run of just 2,666 bottles, it is, like its predecessors, synonymous with quality, complexity, and elegance, and will hit the market in early July.
Sogrape once again pays tribute to one of the most fascinating women in Portuguese history with the new vintage of Antónia Adelaide Ferreira DOC Douro Red 2019, to be released in early July to mark, as usual, Dona Antónia’s birthday. Created in 2011 to mark the 200th anniversary of her birth, this wine honors the legacy of the woman recognized as the greatest ambassador of the Douro and its wines—a visionary, passionate about the region, an entrepreneur, and a woman of great tenacity.
Produced from a rigorous selection of the finest grapes from Sogrape’s estates in the Douro—primarily in Cima-Corgo and the Upper Douro—this wine embodies the best of the region in a vintage that favored a long and balanced ripening period. Signed by Luís Sottomayor, this is a wine “of vibrant complexity and harmony, the result of the characteristics of the vintage and a careful selection of grapes.” After vinification, “the final blends were carefully chosen to showcase the quality of each terroir, allowing us to bottle the best of the Douro and pay due tribute to Dona Antónia, who did so much for this region,” he concludes.
Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, affectionately nicknamed “Ferreirinha” by her fellow countrymen, has been honored with several tributes celebrating her life and work, such as the Dona Antónia Awards —an annual celebration that recognizes Portuguese women with exceptional life stories who stand out for their human qualities and for sharing the same values as this one-of-a-kind figure—and, more recently, the new bridge over the Douro, which will connect Vila Nova de Gaia to Porto. The name was chosen by popular vote, a gesture that, once again, reinforces the importance of and immortalizes the figure of Dona Antónia.
