On National Sustainability Day, and in the year marking the 11th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Sogrape reinforces its commitment to innovation, responsible management of natural resources, and valuing people to ensure the future of viticulture.

In a context where climate change poses growing challenges to viticulture, Sogrape continues to increase its investment in innovation, efficient resource management, and the preservation of biodiversity to ensure the long-term sustainability of wine production.

Sustainability is a strategic priority for the company and is integrated into the way it manages its business, protects the regions where it operates, and prepares for the future of the wine industry. This vision is embodied in the Global Sustainability Program, “Seed the Future,” launched in 2021. Based on the pillars of Planet, Legacy, and People, and supported by concrete commitments and goals, this program is structured into three seven-year cycles leading up to 2042, the year of Sogrape’s centennial.

“Wine is, by its very nature, a legacy we receive and a responsibility we pass on. Caring for the land, people, and communities is part of who we are and the legacy we want to leave for future generations. That is why we view sustainability not only as a corporate commitment, but as a way to protect the conditions that make it possible to continue producing great wines in the future. This is also how we seek to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and to a lasting positive impact,”

says Mafalda Guedes, Director of Corporate Communications and Sustainability at Sogrape and a fourth-generation member of the founding family.

Protecting the resources that make wine possible

With a presence in six Portuguese wine-growing regions, Sogrape has been increasingly leveraging technology to enhance the resilience of its vineyards and promote more efficient management of natural resources. The 34 weather stations installed in Portugal enable the annual monitoring of the vegetation of more than 4 million grapevines, supporting increasingly precise decisions regarding water management and crop protection.

Investment in innovation is complemented by initiatives to preserve viticultural heritage and natural ecosystems. In partnership with PORVID, the company conducts varietal diversity trials that help conserve the grapevine’s genetic heritage. Projects such as the Quinta do Seixo Biodiversity Trail in the Douro region also promote the protection of natural habitats and the enhancement of biodiversity.

This strategy has been yielding concrete results. In 2025, Sogrape reduced total greenhouse gas emissions by 25.2% compared to 2021 and achieved a waste recovery rate of 97.6% in its Portuguese operations. In the same year, renewable energy production from solar panels installed in Portugal, Spain, Argentina, Chile, and the United Kingdom exceeded 1,200 MWh.

Investing in the People Who Build the Future

Ensuring the sector’s long-term viability also involves investing in people. With 1,330 employees spread across eight regions, Sogrape currently ensures that 100% of its workforce is covered by occupational health and safety management systems.

Between 2022 and 2025, in Portugal, the company reduced sick leave days by nearly 60% and recorded no fatalities in the past year.

This commitment to people extends to skills development, the promotion of equal opportunities, and women’s empowerment, through initiatives such as the Dona Antónia Awards, scholarship programs, and partnerships with social impact initiatives, such as Stand4Good and Bagos D’ Ouro.

A Contribution to Global Challenges

Through the Seed the Future program, Sogrape seeks to contribute to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, focusing its efforts on areas where it identifies the greatest potential to make an impact, particularly sustainable water management (SDG 6), affordable and renewable energy (SDG 7), decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), responsible production and consumption (SDG 12), protection of life on land (SDG 15), and partnerships for the implementation of the Goals (SDG 17). This commitment is reinforced by Sogrape’s adherence to the UN Global Compact Principles, which is renewed annually through progress reports.

On National Sustainability Day and in the year marking the 11th anniversary of the United Nations’ adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, Sogrape reaffirms a long-term vision: to protect natural resources, value people, and promote a more resilient viticulture capable of continuing to create value for the regions and communities where it operates.
