Press Release, October 20, 2025 – Some wines are created with a purpose greater than simply being enjoyed. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira DOC Douro is one such wine: created to immortalize the memory and legacy of a woman who forever changed the Douro and Portuguese wine. The 2021 vintage has just hit the market, with just over 5,000 bottles produced.

Released annually on the occasion of her birthday, this wine seeks to reflect the values and personality of the woman who changed the course of the Douro’s history. Sourced from two terroirs that Dona Antónia held so dear—Cima Corgo and the Upper Douro—the 2021 vintage displays a deep, elegant, and firm profile, much like the woman after whom it is named.

“This is an intense, full-bodied, voluminous wine with great complexity, resulting from a careful selection of lots from our finest estates in the Douro. For the 2021 vintage, we selected lots from Quinta da Leda, Quinta do Seixo, Quinta do Caêdo, Quinta do Sairrão, and Quinta do Porto. These wines aged in French oak barrels for 6 months before being blended into the final cuvée in 2,000-liter oak casks for another 24 months, allowing us to bottle the very best of the Douro and pay due tribute, once again, to Dona Antónia, who did so much for this region,” explains Luís de Sottomayor, the winemaker in charge of the project.

The result is a wine with an intense ruby color and a complex aroma featuring notes of red fruit, black fruit, and spices such as pepper and nutmeg; it is mineral-driven, with subtle, elegant, and perfectly integrated oak. On the palate, it reveals good body, vibrant acidity, firm tannins, and a long, harmonious finish.

The excellence of this vintage has already been recognized internationally, with the Antónia Adelaide Ferreira DOC Douro Red 2021 receiving its first rating from international critics, scoring 95 points from James Suckling.

Since 2011—the bicentennial of Dona Antónia’s birth—Sogrape has been honoring the memory of this unique figure through this wine, which symbolizes her unparalleled contribution to Portuguese viticulture.

The Antónia Adelaide Ferreira DOC Douro Red 2021 is now available on the market, with a recommended retail price of €100.00*.*Indicative

About Antónia Adelaide Ferreira

Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira left her mark on 19th-century Portuguese history. Ferreirinha, as she was affectionately known by her fellow Douro residents, was a woman ahead of her time. At age 33, she took over the family business, demonstrating leadership and becoming a symbol of entrepreneurship and winemaking in the Douro region. With courage and ambition, she elevated Port wine at the most prestigious international exhibitions.

Throughout her life, she was a model of tenacity in combating the hardship and misery that befell the region as a result of the phylloxera plague, responding resolutely through research, new plantings, and the acquisition of land and vineyards, thereby ensuring the livelihood of many families and contributing to the region’s recovery. For his dedication and passion for the Douro, he will always be known as Ferreirinha.
