Casa Ferreirinha: Hidden Grape Varieties

Casa Ferreirinha Castas Escondidas Red 2018 is the latest release from this iconic Douro wine brand. A special wine, made from grape varieties that have been hidden away over time, yet with enormous potential to showcase the region’s true terroir.

“Castas Escondidas” is part of the brand’s commitment to launching “specialties”—wines capable of highlighting the different potentials of their terroirs and the exuberance of the variety of grape varieties grown in the Douro Demarcated Region.

In this wine, Casa Ferreirinha highlights lesser-known grape varieties that may even disappear over time, such as Touriga-Fêmea, Tinta Francisca, Bastardo, and Marufo.  These grape varieties have been cultivated in the Douro for several generations, typically used in Port wine, and they bear witness to a biodiversity and potential that must be preserved.

Tinta Amarela, Tinto Cão, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, and old vines help round out the blend of this new “specialty” from the brand, which once again demonstrates innovation in creating unique wines while preserving the region’s character.

“Casa Ferreirinha Castas Escondidas was conceived to highlight grape varieties typically used in Port wine blends but rarely explored, which result in a perfect combination with other, better-known varieties,” says Luís Sottomayor, the winemaker responsible for Sogrape’s wines in the Douro. “The small percentage of grapes harvested from old vines lends even more distinctive characteristics to the final blend,” he concludes.

Casa Ferreirinha Castas Escondidas Red 2018 was aged for 18 months in used French oak barrels and is ready to drink, although it is recommended to cell it, as it will benefit from three to five years of bottle aging.
