The world’s first “Hotel within a Hotel,” featuring rosé-inspired tones and entertainment at its heart
Internationally renowned for creating innovative spaces in some of Portugal’s hottest destinations, Independente has partnered with Sogrape’s iconic brand—Mateus Rosé—which has been winning over generations and setting trends in the market for over 80 years. Together, they present a new and creative lodging concept: the Mateus Hotel, a “hotel within a hotel,” true to the innovative and fun-loving spirit of a brand that knows how to enjoy life!
The Mateus Hotel occupies the top two floors of the newly opened Independente Lisboa-Bica, housed in a former guesthouse built in 1849 and located on the lively Rua de São Paulo, the heart of creativity, nightlife, and currently one of the trendiest streets in the Portuguese capital.
The hotel features 13 rooms, a staircase bar, a restaurant, and the two-bedroom Mateus Penthouse, where “The Stage is Always Set” for events spanning a wide variety of artistic genres, offering an innovative experience for both locals and the most curious travelers.
In keeping with the Mateus Rosé spirit, guests can expect an unconventional hospitality experience here, with an open invitation to everyone to enjoy a wide range of entertainment, get to know the locals, make friends with fellow travelers, and mingle with the best representatives of Lisbon’s cultural scene.
"Mateus Rosé, one of the most beloved brands within Sogrape, is the group’s ‘crown jewel.’ Disruptive since its inception in 1942, with its iconic bottle and its significant influence on the wine industry, Mateus Rosé is the perfect fit for the experience we want to offer travelers and locals alike. We couldn’t be more pleased with this partnership with Independente.”
Raquel Seabra, Executive Director of Sogrape
“At Independente, our vision is to create places where hospitality is lived and breathed in completely disruptive and innovative ways, which is why this partnership with Sogrape is a perfect match. We did it first in Porto, with The House of Sandeman, introducing the world’s first branded hostel, and now we’ve done it again with Mateus Rosé, introducing the world’s first ‘hotel within a hotel’ with a strong and distinctive entertainment component. This new project aims to showcase local talent, offer unforgettable experiences, and foster meaningful connections between locals and travelers.”
Bernardo D’Eça Leal, Founder & Managing Partner – Independente

Rooms
The Mateus Hotel features 13 rooms decorated in shades of pink and inspired by the playful spirit of the Mateus Rosé brand. Each room features unique décor with iconic illustrations from Mateus advertising campaigns and details that immerse guests in the history of this unique brand. The rooms boast a functional and simple aesthetic, with built-in furniture made from sustainable wood. They also include flat-screen TVs, a minibar stocked with sweets and treats from traditional Portuguese brands, and a selection of Mateus products, such as mini-bottles of Mateus Rosé Original and Mateus Rosé Dry Selection.
True to the brand’s youthful and irreverent spirit, the hotel also features Family & Friends rooms, accommodating up to six people—the perfect “stage” for unforgettable family days or epic nights of fun with friends.
Adorning the walls of the common areas are posters depicting the evolution of this iconic brand, tracing its history from its inception to the present day. Here, we also find artwork by artists from Manicómio, a creative space that uses art to break down the stigma associated with mental illness. This platform promotes and recognizes talented artists and supports them with mentoring, therapy, and social tools so they can become financially independent.

Restaurant and Bar
Bar das Escadas
True to its goal of providing fun and unique entertainment, the Mateus Hotel features an unusual minibar on the staircase, which draws us into the Mateus universe. This exclusive Bar das Escadas serves classic and signature cocktails made with Mateus Rosé.
Bica-San
The restaurant offers Portuguese tapas with a Japanese twist, designed for sharing, accompanied by a carefully curated selection of wines. The entire concept tells the story of Bica-San’s imaginary journey—a Portuguese traveler who, upon traveling to Japan, mingles with the Japanese and gradually adapts ingredients from his favorite dishes with Asian elements. He then returns enriched by the experience and views Portugal through a “Japanese lens.” This restaurant is an ode to intercultural exchange and pays homage to the connection between Portugal and Asia.

Matheus Penthouse
Completely reinventing itself as a brand and inviting travelers and locals alike to live and breathe the Mateus Rosé spirit, Mateus Penthouse offers a two-bedroom apartment with a fully equipped kitchen, a dining room, a spacious living room, and balconies with spectacular views of the Tagus River and the Bica neighborhood.
The penthouse comes in three distinct formats, yet with a single purpose: a creative studio where gastronomy and culture intersect, which can be used as a private apartment in one of Lisbon’s trendiest neighborhoods, an event lounge with artistic curation by the Mateus Hotel, and a Chef’s Table hosted by Chef Bruno Antunes.
The decor here is also inspired by the pink world of Mateus Rosé: iconic illustrations from advertising campaigns, books, furniture, paintings, pink-hued lighting, murals, and many other elements representative of its history and the brand’s personality.
Mateus Penthouse – Synonymous with Entertainment
The Stage is Always Set
Every Tuesday, starting at 6:00 p.m., the Mateus Penthouse presents “The Stage is Always Set,” a venue where fun and connection are strongly encouraged through a variety of events that showcase Portugal’s rich cultural scene, including intimate concerts, poetry readings, artistic performances, stand-up comedy, magic shows, wellness experiences, and much more.
During the events, guests can enjoy a selection of dishes from Bica-San’s appetizer menu, paired with Mateus Rosé wine and new signature cocktails, as well as interact with the chef and his team in this entertainment venue.
Apartment
The two-bedroom penthouse can be reserved for exclusive use or for private events in an intimate atmosphere, as if guests were at home and/or hosting their own dinners (whether in a more formal setting or a more relaxed, casual style). As for entertainment, guests can choose to arrange it separately or have the Mateus Penthouse team curate the experience.
Chef’s Table
With a privileged view of the Tagus River, when booking the Mateus Penthouse, guests can also hire the Chef to take charge of the kitchen and invite everyone to participate in the cooking process. The culinary offerings are an extension of the Bica-San menu.

Mateus
Mateus was born in 1942 from the visionary idea of a man ahead of his time—Fernando Van Zeller Guedes, founder of Sogrape—who created a rosé wine bottled in a design inspired by the canteens used by soldiers in World War I.
From Portugal to the world, Mateus quickly became a global benchmark, built on the consistent quality of its wines. More than 75 years later, Mateus continues to believe in reinventing the rosé category, offering refreshing and fruity wines and promoting a variety of easy-drinking experiences—“Rosé all day.” With a presence in over 120 markets, the brand seeks to attract new consumers worldwide and make Mateus a “love brand” once again!
