ANTÓNIA ADELAIDE FERREIRA DOC DOURO RED 2020

Antónia Adelaide Ferreira DOC Douro Red 2020 is a wine that celebrates the legendary figure of the Douro, released annually around the time of her birthday. Limited to just 4,346 bottles and already available on the market, this special edition brings together the terroirs that Antónia Adelaide Ferreira held so dear: Cima Corgo and Douro Superior, as they produce a wine with a character similar to her own: firm, complex, and elegant.

In 2011, this tribute began to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Antónia Adelaide Ferreira’s birth through the creation of a wine bearing her name that honors the passion,  determination, and vision of this figure, who is one of the most indispensable personalities in the history of the Douro Wine Region.

A unique wine whose mission is to reflect the life and work of Dona Antónia, the woman who became a symbol of leadership, entrepreneurship, and tenacity in the Douro, as well as an excellent example of altruism and generosity that has left an indelible mark on the history of the country and the region.  Antónia Adelaide Ferreira is remembered by everyone—and especially by the people of her hometown—for her courage, ambition, and entrepreneurial spirit, which elevated the Douro Region beyond its borders. Throughout her life, she always upheld the value of excellence, reflected in her continuous investment in new techniques related to wine production, careful aging, and the preservation of wine stocks for posterity.

Antónia Adelaide Ferreira Red 2020 has a ruby color and an elegant, highly complex aroma, featuring very ripe red fruit, notes of spices—pepper and cloves—  balsamic notes of truffles and forest floor, slightly stony, with subtle and well-integrated oak. On the palate, it displays good body, firm tannins, vibrant acidity, red fruit flavors, and notes of pepper, promising a very long and harmonious finish. “This is an intense, full-bodied, voluminous wine with great complexity. After vinification, the final blends were carefully selected to showcase the quality of each terroir, allowing us to bottle the best of the Douro and pay due tribute to Dona Antónia, who did so much for this region,” says Luís de Sottomayor.

To honor the winemaking and cultural legacy left by Dona Antónia, this year Sogrape is releasing yet another limited edition of this wine, which has already hit the market.

Alongside this launch, the celebration of this figure’s life and legacy is marked annually by the Dona Antónia Awards. This award recognizes Portuguese women whose life journeys reflect the exceptional values of Antónia Adelaide Ferreira: leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation, humanism, and social responsibility.

About Antónia Adelaide Ferreira

Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira left her mark on 19th-century Portuguese history. Ferreirinha, as she was affectionately known by her fellow Douro residents, was a woman ahead of her time. At the age of 33, she took over the family business, demonstrating leadership and becoming a symbol of entrepreneurship and winemaking in the Douro region. With courage and ambition, she elevated Port wine at the most prestigious international exhibitions.

Throughout her life, she was a model of tenacity in combating the hardship and misery that befell the region as a result of the phylloxera plague, responding resolutely through research,  new plantings, and the acquisition of land and vineyards, thereby ensuring the livelihood of many families and contributing to the region’s recovery. For his dedication and passion for the Douro, he will always be Ferreirinha.
