There are years that go down in history, and 2024 was one such year for the Douro region. Sogrape announced today the declaration of the 2024 Vintage Port for two of its most prestigious brands —Porto Ferreira and Sandeman—the result of an exceptional harvest that produced wines of remarkable structure, depth, and elegance, destined to rank among the region’s greatest vintages. The new Vintages will hit the market in June of this year.
The declaration of a Vintage represents the pinnacle of the Port wine sector. For Sogrape, this announcement reinforces its commitment to excellence and the preservation of a centuries-old legacy. Porto Ferreira Vintage 2024 and Sandeman Vintage 2024 are the finest expressions of this extraordinary vintage and the first Classic Vintages of this decade for both houses, which underscores the exclusivity and high standards inherent in the meticulous production of this special category of Port wine.
For Fernando da Cunha Guedes, President of Sogrape, this declaration is a tribute to nature and time: “Declaring a Vintage is recognizing a truly exceptional year, but also taking on the responsibility to honor that unique moment. It is a tribute to the collective dedication and excellence of the patient work carried out by our teams, to the knowledge passed down through generations, and to our family’s deep connection to the land. Each declaration reinforces a new commitment to a tradition that stands the test of time: caring today for what only the future can reveal.”
The 2024 wine-growing year was marked by a winter with some precipitation, a spring with high temperatures, and significant rainfall in March. The dry, hot summer required careful management of the harvest date, which was influenced by falling temperatures in September and rainfall in October. The result was a productive year with high quality potential, yielding vibrant, well-structured wines that foreshadowed the declaration of the Vintages now announced. Luís de Sottomayor, Director of Oenology at Sogrape and head of Douro and Port wines, highlights the distinction of this vintage: “The 2024 Vintages exhibit remarkable freshness and harmony. Porto Ferreira Vintage 2024 stands out for its solid structure, elegance, and high-quality tannins—a profile true to the brand’s heritage. In turn, Sandeman Vintage 2024 reveals a robust, concentrated profile with great depth, marked by firm tannins that promise extraordinary longevity.”
With this announcement, Sogrape previews the market launch, starting in June 2026, of two wines that promise to captivate collectors, experts, and connoisseurs around the world, and extends a special invitation to its historic wine cellar—which includes Vintages dating back to 1820.
